The Rome-based company aims to cultivate a circular, sustainable model, and has developed biotech protocols for the transformation of agricultural by-products and low-value insect fractions into high-protein additives for aquafeeds. The products, which include ingredients such as pumpkin and hemp protein concentrates, are intended for use as novel macro-ingredients which can be used as a lower-impact alternative to common aquafeed ingredients such as fishmeal or soy.
“We identified a large gap in the market: fishmeal demand is rising very fast, but its availability is limited. Most novel proteins have technical limits that prevent large-scale inclusion in livestock and fish feed, meaning they can’t fully replace fishmeal,” said Alessandro Romano, CEO of Ocean Twist Biotechnology, in a press release.
Led by a team of experts in food technology, fish nutrition, and biotechnology, Ocean Twist seems well-poised to overcome the barriers frequently experienced by those in the alt-aquafeed industry. Over the past three years the team has delivered strong technical results, with presence in three European countries, and aims to drive innovation in the protein and aquafeed industries.
