Spain is the main consumer of white fish in the EU, requiring 57 per cent of white fish to come from imports to meet the country's demand.

Mr Dominguez made the statement at the opening of the Whitefish World Congress, organized by the Spanish Association of Wholesalers, Importers and Exporters of Fish products and Aquaculture (CONXEMAR) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Sustainability

The Secretary General stressed the need to ensure sustainable management of marine resources.

This approach, he added, "is the only way to allow recovery of fish species of great commercial value, and to ensure the present and future of fishing."

On that basis, he advocated the importance of a broad network of EU Fisheries Agreements with Third Countries, which ensure fleet access.

Fighting Illegal Fishing

Mr Dominguez has argued for a supply of fishery and aquaculture products "where traceability guarantees the origin and journey along the entire value chain of fishery products".

CONXEMAR 2013

Mr Dominguez congratulated the FAO and Conxemar for organizing the Congress, which was attended by ministers and deputy ministers from various countries, as well as top experts to analyse the situation and sustainability of fishery resources, market supply and use of the main species of white fish from the industry as well as to share experiences with leading international market players.
