According to TheJakartaPost, it has blamed a number of government policies relating to maritime and fishery activities for threatening the sustainability of fishery resources. Over fishing and widespread illegal fishing in Indonesian waters were both cited as serious concerns.
KIARA Secretary-General M. Riza Damanik on Wednesday noted in a discussion during the third KIARA national congress in Ambon, Maluku, that trade liberalization in the fishery sector has increased the amount of fish being caught.
He gave the example of the Indonesia–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement enacted last year, which exempts 51 Indonesian fishery products from import duties in Japan, and has led to a large increase in exports of Indonesian fish to Japan.
