IFFO estimates that RS certified factories produce material that now represents a third of the worlds fishmeal and fish oil production, a significant step forward for the industry as a whole.
To be certified, fishmeal and fish oil factories must demonstrate sourcing from well managed fisheries and safe and traceable production. Assessments are conducted by an independent certification body and in just over two years, IFFO RS has successfully attracted 90 certified factories, spread across nine countries. Two of the largest sustainably managed fisheries in the world, Peruvian Anchovy and Alaskan Pollock have been approved for supply into the manufacturing food chain including whole fish and by- product raw material to produce certified fishmeal and fish oil.
Andrew Jackson, Technical Director at IFFO said This is another major milestone achieved in a very short time since the launch of the RS Standard by IFFO. It highlights both the responsible nature of our members and the demand for a credible certification scheme to allow our members to demonstrate responsible practices. We also have an Improvers Scheme to encourage non-RS members to work towards full certification and a Chain of Custody certification for value chain partners.
IFFO is taking the RS standard to the next level by ensuring that its certification body achieves ISO 65 accreditation for the standard. ISO 65 offers the scheme a high level of transparency and integrity, contributing towards the credibility of the IFFO Assured Certification Mark that can be used by businesses to signify compliance to the standard.
The RS standard represents a tangible leap forward by IFFO members in ensuring the responsible raw material sourcing, safe production and supply of marine ingredients used for agriculture, aquaculture and consumer products.
