Iceland's Fishing Fleet Continues to Grow

ICELAND - At the end of the year 2012 the total number of fishing vessels, registered at the Icelandic Maritime Administration, was 1,690. The number increased by 35 vessels from the previous year, according to Statistics Iceland.

The number of decked vessels was 778 and their combined size was 89,275 gross tonnages (GT). The number of decked vessels had increased by 14 items and their total size increased by 6,498 GT.

The number of trawlers was 56 at the end of 2011 and their total size amounted to 72,701 GT. The number of trawlers decreased by two from previous year and their combined size decreased by 436 GT.

The number of registered undecked vessels was 856 in 2012 and 4,110 GT. Undecked vessels increased by 23 in number from 2011 and their total size by 122 GT.

The average age of Icelandic fishing vessels was around 24 years and five months at the end of 2012. The average age of decked vessels was nearly 23 years, trawlers around 27 years and undecked vessels 26 years.
