Iceland Saw Fishing Vessel Increase in 2011

ICELAND - At the end of the year 2011 the total number of fishing vessels, registered at the Icelandic Maritime Administration, was 1,655, an increase of 30 from the previous year.

The number of decked vessels was 764 and their combined size was 82,777 gross tonnages (GT). The number of decked vessels had increased by three items but their total size decreased by 680 GT, according to figures from Statistics Iceland.

The number of trawlers was 58 at the end of 2011 and their total size amounted to 73,137 GT. The number of trawlers increased by one from previous year and their combined size by 8,050 GT. The number of registered undecked vessels was 833 in 2011 and 3,988 GT. Undecked vessels increased by 26 in number from 2010 and their total size by 131 GT.

The average age of Icelandic fishing vessels was nearly 24 years at the end of 2011. The average age of decked vessels was 22 years, trawlers 27 years and undecked vessels 23 years.
