Hundreds of Fish Killed in Crayfish Plague Outbreak in Ireland

Health

IRELAND - An outbreak of crayfish plague has been discovered in the River Erne in the Cavan region of Ireland.

The outbreak affected white clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes).

Approximately 700 carcasses were observed in a 10km stretch of the river.

The total population of the area is unknown but only a few live crayfish could be found. These have since died in captivity.

Screening and surveillance measures are in operation, as well as official disposal of carcasses and waste.
