HCMC ornamental fish breeders make big bucks

VIET NAM - Ornamental fish breeding has become a lucrative industry in Ho Chi Minh City with exports fetching over $1.5 million this year, up 30 percent year-on-year.

The municipal Ornamental Fish Farmers’ Association (OFFA) says over 500 families are involved in this emerging industry, of whom over 200 specialize in raising the fish for export.

Ornamental fish farms have steadily increased of late, occupying over 25 ha of water surface and 35,000 sq.m of cement or glass tanks.

To boost the industry, the city earmarked 30 ha in the suburban district of Cu Chi for establishing an ornamental fish-raising village.

But following booming demand, the city plans to expand the village by dozens of hectares.
