Harmful Algal Blooms Detected in Chiloe Region

CHILE - Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) have been detected in five areas of Chile's Chiloe region.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapeca) and Health SEREMI Lakes Region confirmed the presence of HAB's in the fisheries sector in Teupa, Terao, Lemuy South Island, Lincay and Detif province of Chiloé area.

This phenomenon, known locally as Marea Roja corresponds to algae blooms which generate a toxic substance can produce negative effects on the health of those who consume them.

Sernapesca is advising against the consumption of seafood from these areas as even cooking does not eliminate the toxin.
