Fishermen Encouraged to Attend Safety Demonstration in Weymouth

21 October 2016, at 1:00am

Seafish and The RNLI Fishing Safety Team, are holding a man overboard safety demonstration at Weymouth Harbour on 26 October to encourage the observance of best practise safety procedures on board commercial fishing vessels.

Fishing remains the UK’s most dangerous peacetime profession. Nine fishermen’s lives were lost at sea in the first six months of this year, a worrying increase on the seven fishermen who perished during the entirety of 2015.

Local fishermen, Bob Summerhayes, on board an inshore fishing vessel will show attendees the correct way to recover someone who has gone overboard. This will highlight why it is so important for all vessel owners, skippers and crew to practise, review and update safety procedures on a regular basis.

In addition to the man overboard exercise, David Passmore, Proprietor of Protec-Fire will provide firefighting advice for fishermen on how to extinguish fires in the often confined space of a commercial fishing vessel.

At the event, Seafish and The RNLI Fishing Safety Team will be offering personal floatation device (PFD) servicing and training for fishermen, giving free PFDs to those in attendance who do not already own the essential piece of kit.

The RNLI Community Sea Safety team will also be present with their safety trailer offering free safety advice.

The demonstration will be held at Weymouth Pavilion Car park, at the end of Weymouth Seafront, Wednesday 26 October, 2pm till approx. 4pm.
