Farm in a Box is developing a modular, prefabricated RAS solution designed to make sustainable fish farming more accessible and affordable worldwide. By rethinking conventional RAS design, the company uses only essential, proven components that can be quickly assembled on-site. This streamlined, unit-based approach allows fish farmers to scale up production without the high costs, delays and complexity of traditional custom-built systems.

With the funding from the North Holland Innovation Fund, Farm in a Box will develop a functional prototype (MVP) of its integrated RAS control system. The company is also preparing for the construction and commissioning of a demonstration unit to support further commercialisation.

“We are grateful for the support and confidence of the North Holland Innovation Fund. Their funding enables us to take the next step in our development, advancing both our control system and our patent applications,” said Ohad Maiman, co-founder and chief executive officer of Farm in a Box, in a press release.

Maiman, founder and former chief executive officer of The Kingfish Company, launched Farm in a Box together with Thue Holm, the former chief technology officer and co-founder of Atlantic Sapphire. Their goal is to tackle the high costs and long construction times that continue to limit the growth of land-based aquaculture.

“Having built some of the largest systems in the land-based sector, we know the challenges firsthand. We’re excited to tackle these pain points with our innovative modular and prefabricated solution,” said Holm.

After building two of the industry's leading companies, Maiman and Holm came together to rethink the design and construction methods that have made current systems costly and complex. This led to the development of a system that can be shipped globally and assembled on-site at significantly lower cost and with shorter build times than existing alternatives.

“Farm in a Box demonstrates how technological innovation can drive sustainable food production. The team combines deep sector expertise with a scalable concept that can make a global impact. We are proud to support this promising initiative in its crucial development phase toward market launch,” added Ludolf Stavenga, fund manager at the North Holland Innovation Fund.
