Ecuador Develops Strategy for Sustainable Mariculture

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAGAP), with the support of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), is establishing a strategy for the sustainable development of mariculture in Ecuador.

To do this, an Institutional Workshop "Experience of Public Management of Mariculture in Brazil" was held.

The event was attended by officials of the Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Secretariat of Aquaculture, National Finance Corporation (CFN), National Centre for Marine Research at the Polytechnic School of the Coast (Repository), Technical Secretariat of the Sea, National Directorate of Aquatic Spaces National Fisheries Institute (INP), Ministry of Environment (MAE) and the National Development Bank (CFN)

The event covered issues related to science, technology, markets, regulatory framework, environment, identifying sites with the greatest potential for development of mariculture, methodology for an awareness program and financing policies, among others.

In addition, some recommendations for implementing government policies to promote the cultivation of marine species that ensure long-term sustainability were discussed.
