Changes To Toothfish Fishery Management Plan

Politics

AUSTRALIA - The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) is proposing to amend the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery Management Plan 2006.

The proposed Plan amendment will amalgamate the two sectors (the Aurora Trough and the Macquarie Ridge) of the Macquarie Island Toothfish Fishery (MITF) into a single area. This reflects the advice from the Sub-Antarctic Resource Assessment Group (SARAG) that Patagonian Toothfish around Macquarie Island forms a single stock.

In accordance with section 20 of the Fisheries Management Act 1991, AFMA has commenced a process of consultation regarding the amendment to the Plan. AFMA is now seeking public comment on the draft amendment.

AFMA invites all stakeholders and interested parties to provide their comments or submissions in relation to the draft amendment by 14 June 2011.
