Certified Sustainable Lobster Exports To Rise

MEXICO - Based on the recent certification of sustainable production of lobsters in the Baja California peninsula, it is estimated that during this open season, which began this month and ends in February 2012, international sales of this product could reach MX$65 million dollars.

After early September lobster producers Baja California and Baja California Sur were certified "Scientific Certification Systems' (SCS), General Coordinator for Trade Promotion and Export Development, Gabriel Padilla Maya, established that it is feasible to overcome the sales of this product in 2008, which were the highest in recent years, standing at more than MX$42 million.

Maya Padilla praised the work of more than 200,000 cooperatives comprising the Regional Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Production for the prestigious international recognition.

He noted that certification is a guarantee that the capture of lobsters in Mexico is made with respect to the ecological environment and proper management of the factors for his capture, which facilitates the marketing of this product to many foreign markets, especially Asia.

Worldwide, only 128 fish shops have this certification and it is hoped that other Mexican species will also be able to obtain SCS.

He also added that the Federation is involved in trade promotion activities carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), which has allowed them to export lobsters to the Asian market, particularly to destinations such as Japan and Hong Kong.

The official explained that to support trade promotion, SAGARPA has allocated around 500 million pesos.

He stated that in the case of fisheries, the agency promotes attendance at trade shows in Mexico and abroad such as Japan Seafood Technology Expo, where producers attended saw lobster, octopus, frozen fish, abalone, conch, canned and frozen cucumber Sea and bluefin tuna.
