Atlanto-Scandian Herring Negotiations to Continue into 2014

Sustainability Economics Politics +4 more

FAROE ISLANDS - The five coastal parties to the Atlanto-Scandian herring, the Faroes, Iceland, Norway, Russia and the EU, met in London (10 December) for consultations on the allocation key for 2014. Regrettably, it was not possible to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on the allocation, and the parties have therefore agreed to resume the negotiations in January 2014.

Encouraged by the positive spirit of the negotiations, the Faroes will use the coming weeks to engage in bilateral consultations, in an attempt to bring the parties closer together. It is hoped that this will result in the conclusion of a five party agreement for 2014, which is acceptable to all parties.

The EU Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki will also be visiting the Faroes Islands on Wednesday and Thursday (11-12 December) this week, for meetings with the Faroese government to discuss matters of mutual interest.

During her official visit, Ms Damanaki will meet with the Faroese Prime Minister, Mr Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen and with the Fisheries Minister, Mr Jacob Vestergaard. On the second day, Commissioner Damanaki will also meet the Foreign Committee of the Parliament of the Faroe Islands.
