Angola and Argentina Strengthen Aquaculture, Fisheries Cooperation

23 July 2015, at 1:00am

ANGOLA and ARGENTINA - Angola is working with Argentina to strengthen its cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture industries and to improve trade.

Argentina began the cooperation in fisheries and aquaculture with Angola in order to expand South-South cooperation with the African country and give a new impetus to bilateral relations.

"The representatives of Angola are visiting the fishing system of our country. Then we will have another meeting where we will advance the lines of concrete work in cooperation," said Argentina's Secretary of Institutional Coordination and Emergency Agricultural Policy, Javier Rodriguez.

The Angolan Minister of Fisheries, Vitória de Barros Neto, said that "our main topics of interest for the sector are making new small fishing boats, acquisition and tool making for fishing as networks, a system to monitor and locate fish resources and cooling systems, areas in which we believe Argentina is leader."

Fishing in Angola is the third largest sector after oil and mining in the country. About 90 per cent of Angola's fish production is sold in the domestic market and it is a net importer of these products.

Importantly, the Angolan market for these products is highly dynamic, with imports having grown exponentially in the last 11 years. During the period 2003-2009, imports averaged $ 32 million per year, while in the last three years Angola imported an average $155 million.
