23,000 Circle Hooks Given to Fishermen as Part of Sea Turtle Protection

ECUADOR - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries (MAGAP), through the Vice Ministry of Aquaculture and Fisheries and the Undersecretary of Fisheries, has delivered 23,000 C16 circle hooks to fishermen in Manabi, Esmeraldas and Santa Elena, as part of the Regulation and Replacement Programme for Arts and Fishing Gear for the Artisanal Fishing Fleet.

The Undersecretary of Fisheries, Jimmy Martinez Ortiz, said the associations and cooperatives were interested in refilling the hooks.

He noted that this work is done in order to contribute to the sustainability of fisheries resources as a mitigation measure to prevent harm to sea turtles.

These new hooks allow easy release if turtles arre caught unintentionally.

He said the exchange programme hooks, are accompanied by an educational presentation a that teaches fishermen how to release sea turtles.
