Virus Shuts Down Kahuku Shrimp Farm

HAWAII - The state has temporarily shut down a Kahuku shrimp farm to stop a virus from spreading.

The state has quarantined the Ming Dynasty Fish and Shrimp Company. Tests show the shrimp were infected with the Taura Syndrome Virus, which is a serious threat to the aquaculture industry, but not humans.

"There's no impact on human health," said James Foppoli, state veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture. "We probably get frozen shrimp in from Asia and South America that have been affected with TSV and you would never know the difference."
