Venezuela Issues New Sardine Fishing Rules

VENEZUELA - In order to properly conserve sardine populations, the Bolivarian government has issued new rules for the the fishing of this species, which is of high demand in the country.

The new legislation states that there will be a closed season from 15 December to 1 March, within which sardines can only be removed for use as bait, and this activity can only be done in the Gulf of Cariaco and Santa Fe Golfete sectors, located in Sucre state.

The resolution also states that the minimum size for capture, distribution, processing and marketing must be 19 cm in length; while bait must not be less than 15 cm.
