Tippecanoe Fish Farms Approved to Move Forward

US - Plans for a fish farm in southern Tippecanoe County are moving forward. Phil Shambauch wants to raise up to 600,000 pounds of Tilapia per year. The Tippecanoe County Drainage Board gave the project the final go ahead at a meeting Friday.

The farm will be at the north-east corner of US 231 South and State Road 28 near Romney.

It is the first Fish Farming operation approved in Tippecanoe County since the adoption of the new Drainage Ordinance.

"Our drainage ordinance now is concerned now only with the quantity of water that might come off of a development, but also the quality. We have to watch water quality. So this was kind of an interesting project and it will be for the next couple of years as we watch how it works," said Tippecanoe County Commissioner K.D. Benson.

The farm will be in a $3 million building covering about an acre.
