The renewal of the protocol was initialed last June, pending the completion of the legislative process in the EU Council and the European Parliament. The European Commission announced that the Kiribati authorities will allow a provisional application protocol.

This announcement allows Spanish ships to keep fishing, meaning they do not have to stop work from 15 September when the old protocol expires.

The Fisheries Partnership Agreement EU-Kiribati is the most important of those in the Pacific fishery. Currently, this agreement benefits four Spanish tuna seiners, and allows fishing by three Spanish longliners.
