Simplified Procedures for Illegal Products Discussed at Conference

SPAIN - The Secretary General of Fisheries, Carlos Dominguez, has stressed the need to simplify the formalities related to the Regulation of the EU to refuse to import products derived from illegal sources, so that it is more efficient.

This was defended in the high-level meeting in Brussels last week, organised by the EU Commissioner of Fisheries Maria Damanaki.

The meeting analysed the current situation, challenges and the future role to be played by RFMOs to ensure responsible management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory species.

Carlos Dominguez stated in this forum, the Spanish experience in deep-water fisheries and, in particular, the fight against illegal fishing.

The meeting was also attended by the Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the US, Jane Lubchenco, President of EP Fisheries Committee, Gabriel Mato, the Commission thereof MEP Carmen Fraga (Popular Party) and representatives of fisheries administrations of China and New Zealand.
