Between 3.2 and 3.5 million pounds of shrimp per year is thought to be stolen and at least 12 gangs of thieves have been identified.
Losses are thought to reach between $9 and $10 million (187 or 208 million Lempiras).
Victor Wilson, president of the National Aquaculture Association of Honduras, says shrimp theft is worrisome because many companies have ceased operations by this situation, while another group had to double and triple their budgets to strengthen their areas of farm safety, reports ElHeraldo.
