Salmon farms vital, committee hears
BRITISH COLUMBIA - Love them or hate them, salmon farms are providing vital, year-round employment on Vancouver Island, submissions given to a B.C. legislative committee say.
The all-party committee has wrapped up its first round of public meetings in Nanaimo, Tofino and Campbell River.
NDP fisheries critic Robin Austin said that the strongest message they heard was about jobs.
The committee was told that commercial fishing and forestry jobs aren't what they used to be and that tourism revenues aren't enough for the whole year.
