The company its farm in Binyamina. Israel, is “world's first commercial fish farming systems operating as 100 percent recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS)”.

The fish were stocked into the tanks in July and are expected to be sold locally when they reach market size, with a target of taking under six hours to travel from farm to plate.

“We've proven it works. By developing biological methods unique to us, we have essentially created a microcosm of the ocean, without needing the sea,” says Ehud Brill, a marine biologist and director of technologies at Pure Blue Fish.

Once the technological capability is demonstrated, PBF intends to enter the global aquaculture market by establishing large farms across the United States near large population centres, while promoting similar projects in other markets worldwide.

The company adds that it aims to open a 5,000 tonne kingfish farm in the Matthews Industrial Park in Orangeburg County, South Carolina in 2025.
