"We are very proud of our record on meeting the highest environmental standards in the industry. This contributes to underpin our role as the world's leading aquaculture company" said Pan Fish Scotland managing director OddGeir Oddsen.
The 2006 Scottish salmon awards, sponsored by The Crown Estate, were recently held in the Scottish Highlands. The awards were judged by an independent panel of experts. In addition to the award for Best Environmental Performance, awards for Best Kept Farm and Best Entrepreneurial Initiative were presented.
Among the reasons emphasised in the award to Pan Fish Scotland were the company's ability to create sustainable environmental results and the attitude and behaviour that form the basis for the company's efforts. In addition, factors such as excellent relationships with the wild fish sector - recognised and applauded by bodies such as the Fisheries Trust and participation in work groups to help fund the surveying and monitoring of wild salmonid populations in areas where the company has farming operations was mentioned. Pan Fish Scotland has also contributed to the first full-loch fallow of Loch Fyne since fish farming started, leading to drastic reduction in the number of sea lice treatments needed, while keeping lice numbers under tight control, and the company has a major investment programme as part of its strategy to optimise feeding technology and feed usage and minimise the impact of waste feed on the environment.
"We were delighted with the high quality of entries for this the first award scheme to recognise and reward best practice in Scottish salmon farming. In their submission for the Best Environmental Performance Award, Pan Fish Scotland submitted clear evidence that over a number of years they have successfully responded to environmental challenges facing the industry in an enlightened and coordinated manner. Importantly, this work continues with a number of initiatives underway," said Ian Pritchard of the Crown Estate.
