New Algae Species Found in Omani Waters

12 January 2017, at 12:00am

OMAN - The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) has announced that its researchers have found a new type of algae species, Myrionecta rubra, a part of the phytoplankton family during a red tide that occurred recently.

The researchers at the Marine Science and Fisheries Center at MoAF found the microscopic algae during a red tide phenomenon between Musandam and South Sharqiyah coasts, reports the MuscatDaily.

Myrionecta rubra are single-celled organisms that are part of the Mesodiniidae family.

The non-toxic almost spherical organism is red in colour and forms dark red mass during blooming.

Another type of phytoplankton that has caused red tide in the Omani waters is the Noctiluca scintillans. It is a common non-toxic species found in the Omani waters.
