The International Food Information Council’s annual “Consumer Perceptions of Food Technology” report, found that 59 per cent of consumers are “somewhat” or “very” likely to buy GM seafood if the FDA deems it safe.
The findings also highlighted that confidence in the safety of the US food supply remains high.
Although consumers have a positive view of modern agriculture and believe biotechnology can play a role in improving multiple aspects of sustainability, the survey did find that the majority still support that foods produced through biotechnology are labelled.
More than two-thirds of Americans say they would be likely to buy foods modified by biotechnology to provide nutrition and health benefits, such as providing more healthful fats, like Omega-3s (72 per cent) and reducing the potential for carcinogens (69 per cent).
