ITALY - Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mario Catania has called for the strengthening of controls on the fishing industry to protect consumers during the Christmas period.

The minister stated that harbour checks will be intensified to prevent and protect consumers from purchasing fraudulant items.

The harbour inspection is very important as illegal fishing causes serious environmental harm, damaging corals, reef and the seabed with the fishing equiptment, and depletes vunerable fish stocks.

Only last week, the military control of the Port of Castellammare, seized 0.5 tons of dates and 28 kilograms of coral. The poachers had their boat and equipment seized.
