Mr Catania said: "With this measure we want to give a clear signal to combat illegal fishing and begin a journey that, pursuant to delegated legislation, allows us to give the sector a simplified framework, organic and in line with EC rules."

"In particular, we have streamlined the requirements of the controls and fraud in the fishing industry and aquaculture, and provided adequate sanctions."

"The decree establishes a clear framework for the the various professional and non-professional sectors, thus also allowing the safe confines of professional fishing, identified as the one activity that takes advantage of the living marine resources for recreation, tourism, sports and science."

"This is an important intervention to give certainty to an area that has been affected by the crisis and gives young professional fish farmers access to the benefits provided by law for that category."
