SPAIN - An Inter-ministerial Commission for Marine Strategies has been established in Spain to co-ordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of marine planning and strategies in the North Atlantic, South Atlantic, Strait and Alboran, Balearic and Canary Islands.

The Commission will be involved in the management of the Law of Marine Environmental Protection, which includes the creation of Marine Protected Areas, protection of marine habitats and species and the regulation of sea discharges, as part of the integrated maritime policy.

The new Commission will assess and evaluate all information related to the marine environment and distribute the information among different departments.

Members of the Commission will consist of two representatives from each of the Ministries of Development, Industry, Energy and Tourism, Economy, Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Defence, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Interior, Education, Health and Social Services.
