Man Sentenced for Illegally Fishing for Atlantic Salmon

CANADA - A Newfoundland and Labrador man has been convicted for violating the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishing Regulations.

Carrie Dwaine Collins of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, fished for Atlantic salmon with a gillnet without being licensed.

The violation took place in Freshwater Bay, Bonavista Bay near the community of Hare Bay.

Mr. Collins was sentenced to:

  • $1,500 fine with 12 months to pay.
  • Two-year prohibition from recreational fishing and from possessing or applying for any recreational fishing licence.
  • Prohibited from being within 10 metres of inland waters and Freshwater Bay, Bonavista Bay (within DFO caution signs) during the period June 1 – September 10 in 2014 and 2015.
  • Forfeiture of one 11 ft. aluminum boat.
