Lagos to establish specialise fish markets

NIGERIA - Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture & Cooperatives is set to establish specialized fish markets at three senatorial districts, namely Lagos, Ikorodu and Ikeja Divisions of the State which will be operated through private sector participation.

In his remarks, Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Otunba Bamidele F. Dada who was represented by Dr. Bernard Ezenwa, said the topics at the workshop which include new techniques in Tilapia fish production, viability of species for the commercial production of Tilapia, hormones for sex reversal, feed and feeding methods, mistakes in the past and lessons to be learnt, obstacles to overcome and future trends, would engender positive technical discourse.

He also praised the private sector fish farmers who have brought today's aquaculture industry to have a value of N22 billion and the industry is still growing. He remarked that under the Federal Government/UN Millennium Development Goals Project, a total sum of N500m million has been appropriated in 2006 to improve fisheries and aquaculture towards rural dev- elopement for fish food production, livelihood diversification and total wealth creation.
