Investors Sought for Maldives Fisheries Sector

MALDIVES - The Maldives government is to open up the aquaculture and fisheries sector to new investors.

According to a report on Miadhu president Mohamed Nasheed announced the investment plan at a function held at Ihavandhoo of Haa Alif atoll to mark this years Fishermens Day.

The government also hopes to hold a seafood exhibition on the islands on next year's Fisherman's Day.

The president said that the Maldives economy and the fishery sector had faced a tough time over the last year and fish catches have been declining for the last five years.

The Miadhu report says that to develop the sector investment is needed to reform the management of state enterprises, find new expertise and develop new areas in the oceans.
