Mr Crivella explained that the Plan will allocate 4.1 billion in loans and investments to increase fish production. The goal is to produce two million tonnes of fish by 2014, benefiting over 300,000 families and removing around 100 thousand people out of extreme poverty.
The plan will also see investments in research, development, technology and technical assistance.
The minister also highlighted the country's productive capacity and economic potential of the sector. "We want to do a reform of aquaculture, distribute lots to humble people, who want to produce and the best animal protein is fish. You can not have as much water and produce so little. This is the great paradox that we now live in Brazil. We need to take the path of water to the reversal of the crisis. Reversing the crisis in Brazil is using its potential in creating employment, wealth, social inclusion with environmental sustainability. Fish is the way out for us," said the minister.
Government Plans to Reform Aquaculture
BRAZIL - The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Marcelo Crivella, discussed the new Harvest Plan at the meeting of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development and Supply, the House of Representatives.
