Four Per Cent Increase In Vietnamese Seafood Output

VIET NAM - For the first six months of 2014, seafood production reached 2.8 million tonnes.

Viet Nam’s total seafood production is estimated to reach 2.8 million metric tons (MT) in the first six months, up 4.4 per cent year-on-year, reported General Statistics Office.

VietFish reports that the country’s aquaculture output amounted to 1.4 million MT, up 3.4 per cent year-on-year. The figures include 1.09 million MT of fish species, down one per cent and 229,500MT of shrimp, up 26.2 per cent. The remainders are other species.The marine aquaculture production is estimated to hit 170,000MT, increasing nine per cent year-on-year.

Pangasius farming was affected by high feed cost, decreased product price and lower import from major markets. The pangasius farming area saw a decrease of 6.1 per cent to 3,500 hectares.

In term of shrimp farming, black tiger shrimp production hit 106,000MT on the area of 495,000 hectares, down 5.5 per cent in volume and down 10 per cent in area. Meanwhile, vannamei shrimp farming area and production was 53,000 hectares and 117,000MT – up, respectively, 111 per cent and 105 per cent year-on-year. Higher vannamei shrimp output was reported in some provinces, including Ben Tre 18,300MT, Tra Vinh 8,900MT, Bac Lieu 8,200MT and Tien Giang 5,300MT.

The catch from January to June hit 1.4 million MT, up 5.5 per cent year-on-year, according to VietFish. The marine catch was 1.3 million MT, up 5.6 per cent. The good performance was attributed to the favourable weather. However, tuna catch in the first six months hit 10,400MT, down 16 per cent year-on-year. The catch was recorded in Binh Dinh (5,700MT, down 12.3 per cent), Phu Yen (3,200MT, down 22.1 per cent) and Phu Yen (2,700MT, down 30 per cent), Khanh Hoa (1,500MT, down 21 per cent).
