In this first meeting Ignacio Escobar recalled that the main objective of this group is to achieve optimal use of available fishery resources, provided in collaboration with the Autonomous Community, the Spanish Oceanographic Institute and the sector.

The creation of this working group was announced by Minister Arias Caete, after the Sectoral Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development attended by the Directors of the branch of the autonomous regions. In approving the creation, four Working Groups for national fishing grounds of the Gulf of Cadiz, Mediterranean, Canary Islands and Northwestern Cantabrian were decided.

These groups aim to improve the fisheries affected by the adjustment of fishing capacity to the real possibilities, the modification of the technical, management plans, implementation of closures and the review of national legislation currently in place, all with the goal of making national fisheries socially and environmentally sustainable.
