Australia: Huon Aquaculture
Huon Aquaculture became the first salmon producer in Australia to achieve GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Certification.
Frances Bender, joint owner and Director of Huon, said, We believe we produce the worlds most loved salmon and this accreditation is an endorsement of our world-leading salmon farming practices.
Established in 1986 by its current owners, Peter and Frances Bender, Huon Aquaculture is the largest privately owned salmon farming business in Australia. The company employs more than 400 people across five states (Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland), and in 2013, is expected to produce more than 13,000 tons of salmon. Huon was recently awarded 2012 Tasmanian Exporter of the Year.
GLOBALG.A.P. not only audits Huons operations but also those of companies that supply to them, which means that there is a rigorous and thorough understanding of the entire process of farming and growing salmon.
The independent auditor, Paul MacIntyre from Food Certification International who was flown in especially from the United Kingdom, undertook an audit of Huons operations in early November assessing each of their six operational sites around Tasmania against 249 compliance criteria.
We wanted to reduce the need for our retailers and manufacturers to carry out their own audits and that it is a standard they know and trust. This is especially important in our key export markets," Frances Bender, joint owner and director of Huon, said.
We feel it is important to challenge ourselves and have the internal discipline to meet the very high standards set by GLOBALG.A.P.
GLOBALG.A.P. is not a marketing partnership this is an independent third party who reviews not just salmon but all agricultural products in 100 countries around the world assessing our operations and finding that a Tasmanian company, Huon Aquaculture, is world leading.
