The U.S. imports 80 percent of its seafood at the same time that researchers and doctors are promoting even more seafood consumption. The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization reported last year that half of global seafood production comes from aquaculture.
"The United States accounts for only 1 percent of the global $70 billion per year aquaculture industry," said Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, who announced the proposed legislation Friday. "The U.S. is not in the game and this bill will help the U.S. compete in this highly profitable industry."
