Federal Attendance Could Bring $260,000

US - Aquaculture enthusiasts are hoping US Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez will address the Milford Aquaculture seminar next week.

According to the Connecticut Post, the federal official will be in Boston this weekend and hopes to attend the opening session of the 28th annual symposium

Walter Blogoslawski, of the National Marine Fisheries Service said that Gutierrez attendance is likel to mean the announcement of a $260,000 federal grant to fund research at the fisheries service's Milford laboratory.

US Rep. Rosa DeLauro, worked to secure the money for the East Coast Shellfish Growers Association and the East Coast Shellfish Research Institute. She is chair of the Agriculture-FDA Appropriations Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee in Congress.

The annual seminar expects to attract 150 scientists and shellfish industry leaders across the US and from overseas. Papers will be from University studies and businesses working in the industry. Research done at the University of Karachi in Pakistan into the cholesterol content in oysters also will be presented.
