EU buyers send back Tk 500m shrimps

EU - The country's export of the frozen food to the European Union (EU) member countries might suffer a setback due to large scale presence of antibiotic in shrimp consignments.

The European Commission (EC) rejected nearly 25 shrimp consignments worth about Tk 500 million after detecting nitro furan, a harmful antibiotic, in prawn bodies over the past seven months.

As per the EU directives, the exporters are required to send shrimps to Singapore for laboratory test, but some exporters do not follow the guideline properly, Trade Adviser to the EC delegation office in Bangladesh Zillul Hye Razi said.

The authorities concerned should ensure that the samples from the export consignments are sent for verification, he said.
