Great Bay Aquaculture and fisherman James West want to change from growing mussels on suspended ropes to raising codfish in floating pens, according to a report in Mount Desert Islander.
Great Bay has run a small, experimental cod-rearing operation on nearly two acres in the middle othe site since last spring.
Great Bay said it wants to place four 70-metre circular net pens and 250,000 juvenile cod from its own hatchery on the site.
Initially, the fish, which would weigh between 60 and 100 grams (approximately 2 to 3.5 ounces) when they go into the water, would be placed in one pen. As the fish grow, some would be moved into the other pens so the fish would not be crowded.
