BFAR Establishes Seabass Hatchery

PHILIPPINES - A seabass satellite hatchery has been established in Kalibo, Aklan by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BRAF) as part of the initiatives to increase the production of the aquaculture species.

Seabass is locally known as "apahap" or "bulgan.” The species has the potential to contribute to fisheries production but the scarcity of seabass seeds has become a problem of fishpond and fish cage operators.

The new hatchery aims to address the problem and BFAR has linked with a number of other organisations in abid to find viable solutions. Partners in the development work include National Integrated Fisheries Development Technology Center based in Dagupan City, and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center in Tigabauan, Iloilo to provide technical assistance in production and marketing

The P1.5-million facility in Brgy. Caano, is managed by Kalibo. It has an artemia laboratory, larval-rearing tanks, chlorella tanks and filtration tank and water reservoir. .
