Bakkafrost to Expand Smolt Capacity

2 February 2015, at 12:00am

FAROE ISLANDS - Bakkafrost has signed a contract to expand its smolt production in Viareii.

This expansion will increase the smolt production in Viðareiði by a factor of four. The expansion will be finished within one year.

The smolt station will be equipped with state of the art technology. With this new capacity Bakkafrost will be able to produce bigger smolts thereby reducing salmon's time at sea, thus minimising the risk of sea lice and disease.

The agreement was signed with the construction company Articon and also includes expanding other parts of Bakkafrost smolt production in 2016 and 2017.
