The ASC standard was developed in cooperation with WWF. The standard is seen as the most stringent in the aquaculture industry and outlines eight main requirements with 422 individual points with stringent requirements regarding fish welfare, lice, smolt production, feed production and the environment.

In 2014, Bakkafrost announced a goal that the first farm would be ASC certified in 2015.

Regin Jacobsen, CEO of Bakkafrost, stated: "It is decisive for the competitiveness of Bakkafrost that we follow the toughest international standards and we continuously set yourselves new and challenging goals. ASC is a very thorough and challenging international standard that requires that our procedures are sustainable.

Bakkafrost is working on getting more farms ASC certified.

Bakkafrost already has several other international certifications: The whole value chain is GlobalGAP certified and the processing plants are BRC, IFS and ASC certified.
