Aquaculture In Camaguey Ranked First In Cuba

Economics +1 more

CUBA - Initiatives and sustained efforts by those who work in the aquaculture sector in Camaguey, meant that the province recorded high levels of catches, with over 5,000 tonnes of fish.

Ernesto Veloz, who runs PESCACAM Fishing Company in Camagüey, emphasised the creativeness of his workers, who faced difficulties concerning fishing-tackles and other resources. Since networks were rebuilt and fish traps and boats were repaired in the dams, the area has seen a growth in the catch of 1,200 tonnes.

In the provincial contests, which are held each year in Cuba, the fishermen in Camaguey produced the greatest amount of young fish - almost 45 millions, saving almost one million dollars as result of import replacements.

The Camaguey, and Jimaguayú Dam areas stood out the most overachieving the catches plans, with productions even higher than those of the provinces of Havana, Matanzas, Ciego de Avila, Las Tunas and Holguin combined.

For the current year, Ernesto Veloz explained that the commitment is to fish more than 5,200 tonnes, increase the yields in the intensive raising of tilapias and to improve the sales fresh fish, croquette and other lines of production.
