Anchovy Fishery Reopens in the Gulf of Cadiz

The opening follows an agreement reached between the Government of Spain and Portugal for the sale of 500 tonnes of Portuguese quota for anchovy, which will allow the reopening of the fishery in IX (which includes the Gulf of Cadiz).

During his appearance at a press conference at the headquarters of the Ministry, Mr Dominguez explained that the anchovy fishing season of 2012 has been complicated since its inception by overfishing consensual for 1,000 tons in 2011 by the previous government, which left the quota for this year at 3,000 tonnes.

However, Mr Domnguez clarified that provisional figures show that on 15 August 4,100 tons of anchovy had been unloaded, "meaning that we had already exceeded a minimum of 300 tons".

"With these 500 tons provided by Portugal, it will compensate for the overfishing that has occurred so far."

"Given that Portugal can transfer more tons before year end, and we can use part of the 2013 quota in 2012, the fishery opening will last until the end of this August."

Finally, Mr Dominguez has expressed gratitude to the Government of Portugal "for this great collaboration to achieve a solution to this difficult situation."
