Agriculture Takes Centre Stage at Upcoming Australian Conference

AUSTRALIA - Final preparations are underway for ABARES Outlook 2014, Australias premier agricultural conference, which will be held in Canberra on 4 and 5 March this year.

The conference coincides with a renewed national interest in key issues affecting the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors, according to Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) Executive Director, Karen Schneider.

"Outlook 2014 combines analysis of economic and trade data from experts across the globe with the on-farm perspective of Australian primary producers. It is a unique opportunity to better understand current debate,” she said.

Under the theme of ‘realising the opportunities’, Outlook 2014 will examine emerging markets for Australian agriculture, Ms Schneider added.

The conference features presentations on the national economic outlook, the Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper, opportunities in Asian markets, developments in northern Australia and challenges in productivity and infrastructure.

International presenters include Ken Ash (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), Joseph W. Glauber (United States Department of Agriculture), Tassos Haniotis (European Commission), Yiping Huang (Peking University), Berry Marttin (Rabobank The Netherlands) and Mariele Pickler (Bayer Crop Science Brazil).

Local producers and representatives include Natalie Williams (Granville Station, Jericho, Queensland), John Cameron ('Kintyre', Bongeen, Queensland), Brent Finlay (National Farmers' Federation), Alexandra Gartmann (Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal) and John Williams (Warrnambool Cheese and Butter).

The ABARES Outlook conference is the leading forum in Australia for the public and private sector and gives decision-makers the forecasts they need to make informed policy and business decisions. It will also examine the key risks and opportunities that are presented by the current economic and trade environment for both individuals and businesses.
