SOUTH AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIA - The South Australian abalone season has started off well, with a diver picking up one of the biggest abalones seen in Port Lincoln.

ABCRural reports that the green lip abalone weighed in at 1.24 kilograms and is the largest one seen at Western Abalone Processors in 30 years.

Manger Jim George says he has never seen an abalone over a kilogram before and is not sure if he will again.

"It's a monster. It's just one that obviously escaped the divers taking it or capturing it, who knows how old, I would love to know, it would probably have to be 15 [years old] or even if they can live 15 to 20 years," said Mr George.
