What is it?

Monodon slow growth syndrome (MSGS) is a disease that affect black tiger prawn. The cause of MSGS is uncertain.

Diagnosis

A sign of the disease is often abnormally slow growth, resulting in irregularly sized prawns. Average daily weight gain is low, less than 0.1 g/day at four months of age.

Gross pathological signs are:

  • unusually dark colour
  • unusually bright yellow markings
  • brittle antennae
  • bamboo-shaped abdominal segments

There are no definitive microscopic pathological signs.
